With a population of only around 650 people, Tiree is the most westerly island in the Inner Hebrides. So if you’re looking for a secluded island holiday, Tiree is the place to be. It’s even known by some as the ‘sunshine isle’.Farming and fishing may be the most traditional industries on Tiree, but these days tourism is one of the main sources of employment. People come from all over to enjoy Tiree’s beaches and to admire its unique architecture. The island is home to several idiosyncratic ‘blackhouses’ – built with double dry-stone walls and thatched with local grass, blackhouses are traditional in the Hebrides and in parts of the Scottish highlands. And Tiree has a bunch of them!This design shows a quiet spot on the Tiree coast, with an oyster catcher floating on the wind – Tiree is known for its astonishing birdlife. Five Highland cows stand on the crushed white shell-sand beaches, and in the distance are several white houses along the shore – an idyllic scene to enjoy as you dry the dishes.
